More About Evolvulus Blue My Mind®
There are a lot of plants marketed as “blue,” but very few deliver a true, clear sky blue the way Blue My Mind® does. The first time we trialed it, I remember walking the courtyard in mid-July heat and thinking, that color shouldn’t even be possible in this weather. The blooms are that crisp, electric, and unmistakably blue. Each morning the flowers open fresh with the sun, and on bright days the plant can look almost carpeted in color. From Late Spring straight through Fall, it keeps producing without big pauses or awkward off-weeks. That consistency is what separates it from a novelty plant and makes it a real workhorse.
The foliage is every bit as important as the flowers when it comes to performance. The slight sheen on the leaves helps reflect intense sunlight, reducing heat absorption and protecting the plant from stress during long, bright Summer days. Here in the Upstate, July & August is the real test. That’s when the humidity hangs heavy and the sun feels relentless from mid-morning until late afternoon. A lot of blue-flowering plants look great in May and June, then quietly fade, bleach, or simply stop producing once the heat sets in. Blue My Mind® does the opposite. As temperatures climb, it seems to gain confidence. I’ve watched it through stretches of triple digit heat indexes where other annuals start to thin or yellow, and it just keeps performing.
Why We Like It (Our Trials)
In our Zone 8a test beds here in the Upstate, Blue My Mind® has proven itself during the stretches that separate average plants from great ones. Multiple Summers in recent memory, we have had 3+ weeks of 95-100° heat with humidity thick enough to slow you down just walking the courtyard, and this plant never blinks. While some annuals thinned in the center or started reaching for relief, Blue My Mind® stayed dense and evenly mounded. The growth filled in naturally without us having to shear it back midseason. Even after heavy afternoon thunderstorms followed by blazing sun the next morning, it kept its shape instead of splitting open. By early September, when many annuals were done, it still looked like it had something to prove.
We’ve also pushed it in a few different settings to see where it shines brightest in our climate. In black nursery containers sitting on gravel, it continued flowering without leaf scorch. In raised beds with fast-draining soil, it spread evenly but never became invasive or unruly. Along walkway edges, it created a clean ribbon of blue that softened the hardscape without spilling too aggressively into traffic areas. It responds well to a light trim if you want to reset it, but honestly, we rarely needed to touch it. Even under conservative watering schedules, once established it held up with minimal wilt. For gardeners who need something that performs from May heat straight through September humidity, Blue My Mind® has earned its place in our rotation year after year.
Blue My Mind® vs. Other Evolvulus
Evolvulus Blue My Mind® stands out for its exceptionally rich, true-blue flowers and consistently uniform growth habit. Unlike standard Blue Daze types that can become leggy or sporadically flower under heat stress, Blue My Mind® was selected and bred for stronger branching, more compact form, and prolific blooming that holds up in full sun and high temperatures. When compared to Hawaiian Blue Eyes, Blue My Mind® typically maintains a tidier mound with slightly smaller but intensely colored blooms, making it ideal for containers and tighter landscape spaces.
Relative to Beach Bum® Blue, it offers similarly dependable color but with a more refined, controlled profile rather than Beach Bum’s broader spread and freer flowing habit. Overall, Blue My Mind® delivers a blend of structure, heat tolerance, and continuous color that outperforms many traditional and newer Evolvulus cultivars in both garden beds and decorative plantings.
