More About Lobularia ‘Easy Breezy™ Purple’
Lobularia ‘Easy Breezy™ Purple’ reminds me how far Sweet Alyssum breeding has come over the past decade. Instead of the pale, delicate flowers many gardeners remember from older Alyssum varieties, this selection produces rich clusters of deep purple blooms that create a much stronger visual presence in the garden. The flowers carry that classic sweet alyssum fragrance too a soft, honey-like scent that you really notice when the plant is placed along walkways, patio containers, or near the edge of a raised bed where the breeze can move through it.
What truly separates ‘Easy Breezy™ Purple’ from traditional varieties is its ability to keep performing once the weather starts warming up. Older varieties tend to struggle when temperatures climb, often fading or slowing their bloom production as soon as late spring heat arrives. This variety was bred specifically to overcome that weakness. The plant itself forms a neat, well-branched mound with soft trailing growth around the edges. In containers, that habit creates a natural “spilling” effect that softens the edges of pots and hanging baskets without becoming messy or leggy. In garden beds, it works beautifully as a front-of-border plant where the flowers form a dense carpet of color that contrasts nicely against taller perennials or shrubs behind it.
Why We Like It (Our Trials)
In our trials here in Upstate South Carolina, ‘Easy Breezy™ Purple’ has consistently been one of the longest-performing Lobularia selections we grow. Many cool-season annuals tend to peak early in spring and then begin declining once temperatures climb, but this variety transitions much more smoothly from cool spring weather into early summer conditions. Instead of fading out, it keeps producing fresh clusters of flowers and maintains good coverage across the entire plant. Another trait we’ve appreciated is how well it holds its structure. Some Lobularia varieties stretch or thin out as they age, but ‘Easy Breezy™ Purple’ keeps a tighter, more balanced habit throughout the season.
Easy Breezy™ Purple vs. Other Sweet Alyssum
Within the Easy Breezy™ Series, ‘Easy Breezy™ Purple’ is the boldest color option, pairing strong lavender-purple blooms with a vigorous trailing habit. Its stronger color saturation helps it hold its presence even when paired with bold companion plants. Compared to Easy Breezy™ White, it delivers more visual impact and contrast, while both share the same fast fill-in and cascading performance. This series is bred for movement and coverage rather than strict control.
Against the Yolo Series, Easy Breezy™ Purple is larger, looser, and more dominant in containers. This makes it better suited for large containers and mixed plantings where scale and movement are desired over precision. Compared to Stream™ Compact Purple, it trails dramatically rather than forming a tidy mound. Among purple alyssums, it’s best suited where spill and fullness matter most. Gardeners choose Easy Breezy™ Purple when they want alyssum to play a starring role in containers and baskets.
