More About Gomphrena ‘Gnome Purple’
‘Gnome Purple’ is one small Gomphrena that quietly outperforms almost everything around it once Summer turns serious. The blooms are a rich, saturated purple, perfectly round and papery, sitting neatly on top of sturdy stems like little buttons of color. In full sun, where lesser annuals start to fade or stall, this one keeps its color intensity without bleaching. The texture of the flowers is firm and almost straw-like, which is part of why they hold so well on the plant. Even during stretches of heat and dry weather, the blooms remain clean and vibrant.
What makes the Gnome series so useful is its size and structure. ‘Gnome Purple’ stays compact and well-branched, forming a tight little mound that never feels floppy or wild. It fits beautifully into containers without overpowering neighboring plants, and it is ideal for tighter garden spaces where you need discipline. From Late Spring all the way to frost, it keeps producing new flower heads without any need for deadheading. You plant it, water it in, and then it just gets to work.
Why We Like It (Our Trials)
In our Zone 8a trials, ‘Gnome Purple’ has proven itself during the hottest part of the year. I have planted it in beds that get baked from mid-morning until evening, and it never slowed down. While other annuals began to look tired in August, this one kept pushing fresh blooms like it did not notice the heat. The mound stayed tight and uniform without stretching open in the center. That kind of consistency is rare in compact annuals.
We have used it in mixed containers, lining the front of borders, and even repeating it in small drifts where the purple globes create a steady rhythm of color. Pollinators, especially bees, work the blooms consistently throughout the day. I also love cutting stems for fresh arrangements because they hold their form so well, and when dried, they retain that deep purple tone beautifully. For gardeners who want reliable Summer color without constant maintenance, ‘Gnome Purple’ is about as dependable as it gets.
Gnome Purple’ vs. Other Gomphrena
Gnome Purple is all about restraint, structure, and season-long dependability, offering a compact, low-profile form that stays neat from planting through frost. Compared to Truffula Pink, Gnome Purple remains tight and controlled, making it ideal for containers, edging, and highly designed spaces where scale matters. Its rich purple blooms read as solid blocks of color rather than airy sprays, giving plantings a grounded, intentional look.
Ping Pong Purple is similar in color intensity but slightly more structured in bloom presentation; its globe-shaped flowers are uniform and bold, yet the plant maintains a disciplined, tidy habit much like Gnome Purple. Strawberry Fields, on the other hand, brings a looser, more naturalistic character to the garden. Its slightly elongated, textured red blooms and taller, airier stems create movement and a meadow-like feel that contrasts with the compact, uniform mounds of Gnome Purple.
