More About Persian Shield
Persian Shield is grown entirely for its foliage—and few plants can compete with it on color alone. The large, elongated leaves shimmer in shades of deep purple, violet, and silver, catching light in a way that almost looks metallic. It brings instant drama to containers and shaded beds where flowers often struggle to stand out.
Unlike trailing foliage plants, Persian Shield grows upright and bushy, giving it real presence in a planting. It pairs beautifully with greens, chartreuse, and soft pastels, acting as a visual anchor rather than background texture. In brighter light, the color intensifies; in deeper shade, it softens but never disappears.
Persian Shield prefers consistent moisture and protection from harsh afternoon sun. While it’s tolerant of heat, dry soil can dull the foliage and slow growth. Pinching the tips early in the season encourages fuller, more compact plants.
Why We Like It (Our Trials)
At Garden Delivery, Persian Shield has been one of our most reliable foliage performers for shade and part shade. In our trials, it held strong color through summer heat as long as moisture was consistent. Even when flowering annuals faded, Persian Shield kept containers looking intentional and high-impact.
We also appreciate how versatile it is. It works just as well as a standalone accent as it does mixed with other shade plants. When someone wants bold color without relying on blooms, Persian Shield is one of the first plants we recommend.
