More About Gaillardia ‘SpinTop™ Red Starburst’

‘SpinTop™ Red Starburst’ is not a subtle Gaillardia, and it is not meant to be. This is the kind of plant that commands attention from across the garden and does not apologize for it. The blooms are saturated red, radiating outward from brilliant golden-yellow centers in a true starburst pattern that almost seems to glow in full sun. When the light hits it just right in Late Spring, the entire mound looks like it is lit from within. If you are building a planting that needs energy, movement, and confidence, this is the color you reach for.

The SpinTop™ Series was bred for structure, and ‘Red Starburst’ absolutely delivers. It forms a tight, rounded mound that stays compact and well-branched instead of stretching open the moment Summer heat settles in. The blooms begin early and roll steadily forward through the season, especially with light deadheading. I have watched it flower through stretches of heavy heat when other perennials started to look tired and thin, and it simply kept going like it had something to prove.

Why We Like It (Our Trials)

In our Zone 8a trial garden, ‘SpinTop™ Red Starburst’ was planted in one of the harshest exposures we have. Full sun all day, reflected heat from nearby stone, and long stretches without supplemental irrigation. I wanted to see if the red would fade or if the mound would split open by mid-Summer the way older blanket flowers sometimes do. It did neither. The color stayed intense and high-contrast, and the plant held its tight, symmetrical form well into peak heat.

I still remember walking the beds in August when many perennials were clearly slowing down. This one was still pushing fresh blooms, bright red against the gravel, covered in bees. It did not look stressed, and it did not look tired. It looked planted with intention. The uniformity across multiple plants was just as impressive, each mound consistent in height and spread, which makes design repetition clean and reliable. For gardeners who want unapologetic color, serious heat tolerance, and almost effortless performance, ‘SpinTop™ Red Starburst’ earns its spot.

SpinTop™ Red Starburst vs. Other Gaillardia

Red Starburst is the boldest and most high-contrast option among the Gaillardias we carry, thanks to its deep red petals and bright golden centers. Compared to SpinTop™ Mango, Red Starbusrt feels more dramatic and energetic, while Mango leans warmer and softer with its orange tones. When placed next to Arizona Apricot, Red Starburst delivers much stronger visual punch, whereas Apricot blends more gently into mixed plantings. Against Arizona Red Shades, Red Starburst typically holds a tighter habit and more consistent flowering, especially through peak summer heat. All four share excellent heat and drought tolerance, but the SpinTop™ varieties tend to stay more uniform and tidy overall. I reach for SpinTop™ Red Starburst when I want unmistakable color that reads clearly from a distance and holds up all season without fuss.
