More About Lantana ‘Dallas Red’
Lantana ‘Dallas Red’ is a classic, time-tested landscape lantana prized for its exceptional heat tolerance, toughness, and vigorous growth habit. Its rounded flower clusters open in deep red tones and gradually mature to include hints of orange and gold, creating a dynamic, multicolored effect that intensifies in full sun. Bloom production is relentless, continuing from late spring through frost, even during periods of extreme heat when many flowering plants slow down or shut down entirely.
Unlike compact or container-focused lantana varieties, ‘Dallas Red’ is best used where it has room to spread and fully express its growth potential. Its sprawling, mounding habit makes it especially effective in large landscape beds, slopes, roadside plantings, and mass installations where coverage, color, and durability matter most. Once established, it fills space quickly, suppresses weeds, and provides a bold, high-impact look with very little intervention.
Why We Like It (Our Trials)
In our trials, ‘Dallas Red’ has consistently proven to be one of the toughest and most reliable Lantanas available. Plants thrived in full sun, poor and sandy soils, and extended periods of drought with minimal supplemental watering. Even after heavy rain, high humidity, or heat stress, it rebounded quickly and resumed blooming without skipping a beat.
We especially appreciate its performance in large-scale landscapes where low maintenance and consistent color are essential. Once established, ‘Dallas Red’ requires very little care beyond occasional shaping, yet delivers nonstop blooms all season long. Butterflies and bees are constant visitors, making it not only a workhorse plant, but a valuable contributor to pollinator-friendly gardens as well.
Dallas Red vs. Other Lantana Varieties
Compared to its Lantana counterparts, Samantha and Miss Huff, Dallas Red is the boldest and most visually aggressive, with larger flowers and a taller, more dominant presence in the landscape. It doesn’t rely on foliage interest or subtlety—this variety is all about saturated color and visibility from a distance. Among these three, Dallas Red is the best choice when maximum heat and drama are the priority.
When compared to the Bandana® Series, Dallas Red grows taller and looser, while Bandana varieties stay more compact and refined. Against the Lucky™ and Little Lucky™ Series, Dallas Red sacrifices tight form for sheer color intensity and size. Compared to New Gold or Chapel Hill Yellow, Dallas Red is upright rather than spreading, making it better suited for focal points than groundcover applications.
