More About Coleus ‘Down Town® Greenville’

Coleus ‘Down Town® Greenville’ is a bold, refined foliage plant featuring deep burgundy leaves accented by rich green margins, delivering strong color contrast with a polished, intentional look. The foliage coloration is saturated and stable, providing dependable impact from spring through fall.

As part of the Down Town® series, this variety was bred for improved sun tolerance, strong branching, and upright structure. Unlike older coleus that struggled in full sun or became floppy, ‘Greenville’ maintains clean lines and consistent color even during summer heat.

Why We Like It (Our Trials)

In our trials, ‘Down Town® Greenville’ has been exceptionally reliable in both full sun and partial shade. It fills in evenly, holds its shape without pinching, and maintains rich color without fading or scorching.

We especially appreciate its versatility in design. It works beautifully as a container focal plant, a bold border accent, or a mass planting where its uniform habit creates a cohesive, professional look. The darker foliage also pairs exceptionally well with chartreuse coleus, bright annuals, and flowering plants.

Down Town® Greenville vs. Other Coleus

‘Greenville’ is one of the darkest and most refined options in the Down Town® Series, offering more depth than ‘Down Town® Vegas Neon’. Where Vegas Neon energizes, Greenville grounds. This makes Greenville especially effective in designs that need contrast without visual noise.

Compared to similarly dark Doleus like ‘Defiance’, ‘Main Street Beale Street, and ‘Peter’s Wonder’, Greenville is the most subdued. It blends more easily into mass plantings and is less likely to overpower companion plants. This restraint allows it to pair well with flowering annuals or ornamental grasses.

Against upright structural types like ‘Main Street Wall Street’ and ‘FlameThrower™ Cajun Spice’, Greenville serves as a middle ground — bold but not rigid, dark but not heavy. Its balanced presence makes it a reliable choice when a planting needs depth without dominance.
