More About Supertunia® ‘Black Cherry’

Supertunia® ‘Black Cherry’ is known for its rich, dramatic coloration, featuring deep cherry-red petals surrounding an almost black center. The high-contrast blooms create a bold, moody look that stands out beautifully in containers and garden beds.

As part of the Supertunia® series, this variety is self-cleaning and continuously blooming, producing fresh flowers without the need for deadheading. The plant maintains a full, well-branched habit and delivers reliable color from spring through fall.

Why We Like It (Our Trials)

In our trials, ‘Black Cherry’ has been a consistent performer in heat and full sun, maintaining strong color saturation and steady flower production throughout the season. It keeps a balanced shape and pairs easily with both bold and neutral companions.

We especially appreciate its design versatility. The dark center adds depth and contrast, making this an excellent accent plant alongside whites, pinks, chartreuse foliage, and silver tones.

Supertunia® Black Cherry vs. Other Supertunias

Within the Supertunia® Series, Black Cherry is positioned as a deep, red-forward selection that sits just short of true burgundy. Black Cherry brings noticeably more red warmth than Supertunia® Bordeaux™, which leans deeper and more wine-toned with a velvety finish. Royal Velvet shifts cooler and heavier in comparison, making Black Cherry feel brighter and more energetic by contrast. While all three perform at a similar level, Black Cherry tends to lift a color scheme rather than anchor it. Really Red reads cleaner and bolder, which positions Black Cherry as the deeper, more refined red in the lineup. Each fills a distinct design role despite sharing the same strong performance genetics.

Compared to the Supertunia Vista® Series, Black Cherry is more controlled and better suited to containers. Vista varieties are bred for rapid landscape coverage, while Black Cherry integrates more cleanly into mixed plantings and containers. When compared to Crazytunia® Petunias, Black Cherry trades novelty for reliability. Crazytunias focus on pattern and visual tricks, while Black Cherry delivers consistent, uniform color. In practice, Black Cherry works best as a deep accent color. It pairs beautifully with silvers, whites, and warm yellows, adding richness without overpowering.
