More About Calibrachoa ‘Superbells® Blackcurrant Punch™’
If you’re looking for a Calibrachoa with real depth and drama, ‘Superbells® Blackcurrant Punch™’ delivers every single time. The flowers are a rich, saturated blackcurrant-purple with darker centers that give them a velvety, almost inky look. It’s the kind of color that reads bold from a distance but rewards you with even more richness when you walk up to the container. Even in full sun, that color holds steady with strong, confident blooms from the moment the plant starts flowering.
This variety earns its place in the within the Superbells® Line for a reason. It was bred for strength, reliability, and consistency, with excellent branching that fills in evenly and a naturally balanced trailing habit that doesn’t get lanky or uneven. Where some darker calibrachoa can struggle mid-season, Blackcurrant Punch™ keeps pushing. It stays full and well-covered, producing wave after wave of flowers from early spring straight through frost, making it a dependable choice for containers and baskets that need to look good all season long, not just at planting time.
Why We Like It (Our Trials)
In our testing garden here in the SC Upstate, ‘Superbells® Blackcurrant Punch™’ has proven to be one of those plants you can count on when the heat turns up. It establishes quickly in containers and hanging baskets, filling in fast without that awkward, sparse stage some calibrachoa go through early on. The trailing habit is controlled and even, so it spills naturally over the edges without becoming unruly or swallowing up neighboring plants. With consistent feeding, it keeps flowering heavily through the toughest part of Summer.
Blackcurrant Punch™ is very versatile and can be used in many ways. The deep, blackcurrant-purple acts like a visual anchor in mixed containers, grounding brighter colors and giving the whole planting a more intentional, finished look. It makes whites feel crisper, silvers more refined, and chartreuse foliage absolutely glow. At the same time, it has enough richness to stand up to bold pinks, corals, and oranges without clashing. The flowers are self-cleaning, so there’s no constant deadheading, and the plant keeps itself looking tidy with minimal input. It’s one of those rare Calibrachoa that looks polished and thoughtfully designed all season long, even when you’re not babying it.
Blackcurrant Punch vs Other Calibrachoa Varieties
Blackcurrant Punch is one of the deepest, most saturated purple selections available. Compared to Grape Punch, it reads cooler and darker, with less red influence and more nighttime depth. Where Grape Punch leans brighter and more playful, Blackcurrant Punch feels moodier and more dramatic. Against Watermelon Punch, which introduces brighter pink tones and higher contrast, Blackcurrant Punch stays uniform and refined, making it a stronger choice for monochromatic or high-contrast black-and-white designs.
Outside the Superbells® family, Blackcurrant Punch overlaps visually with darker Cabaret® Selections, but it carries more vigor and flower size than most Cabaret types. Compared to the Cha-Cha™Series, which is energetic and expressive, Blackcurrant Punch feels more grounded and architectural. When paired with Colibri® Pure White, its depth becomes even more pronounced. While next to Caliloco Dracula, Blackcurrant Punch reads cleaner and more classic, lacking Dracula’s novelty contrast but offering far broader design versatility.
