More About Calibrachoa ‘Superbells® Grape Punch’

Calibrachoa ‘Superbells® Grape Punch’ is one of those varieties of Calibrachoa that stops people mid-aisle once it hits its stride. The blooms are a deep, saturated purple, rich and velvety rather with darker centers that give each flower dimension and depth. It’s a color that reads bold from a distance but still holds detail up close, which is something I always appreciate in container plants. Even in full, direct sun, that purple stays true and doesn’t bleach out or dull as the summer wears on.

As part of the award-winning Superbells® Series, ‘Grape Punch’ brings the kind of vigor and reliability I expect from Proven Winners genetics. It branches early, fills in quickly, and develops into a dense, trailing plant that looks intentional rather than wild. From spring through frost, it keeps producing fresh blooms without thinning in the center or stretching awkwardly, which makes it easy to rely on whether you’re planting one basket or designing a whole run of mixed containers.

Why We Like It (Our Trials)

I’ve used ‘Grape Punch’ in just about every way you can use calibrachoa—solo baskets, mixed porch pots, large commercial planters and it always behaves. It has enough presence to stand on its own, but it also knows how to play nicely with others. I still remember the first season we trialed it in a row of full-sun hanging baskets. We had a stretch of hot, humid weather early on, and while many lesser varieties stalled and wilted, ‘Grape Punch’ just kept rolling. The color stayed strong, the plants stayed full, and by mid-summer those baskets looked even better than they did in June.

I’ve paired it with bright yellows, whites, and chartreuse foliage more times than I can count, and it always acts like the anchorgrounding brighter colors and giving the whole combination a more finished, professional look. One season, I tucked it into a large mixed container with white angelonia and sweet potato vine, fully expecting it to get overshadowed. Instead, the deep purple flowers popped through the planting all summer long, adding contrast and richness right when the lighter colors needed it most. That’s when it really clicked for me how useful this variety is in design.

Superbells® Grape Punch vs. Other Calibrachoa

Superbells® Grape Punch is one of the most vibrant and eye-catching purples in the Superbells® Lineup, known for its brightness and clarity rather than depth. When compared to Blackcurrant Punch, Grape Punch reads noticeably lighter and more energetic, trading moody, nighttime tones for a fresher, more playful purple. Against Superbells® Pomegranate Punch, it lacks the red undertones and richness, but gains a cleaner, more saturated purple that stands out more distinctly from a distance. Compared to Superbells® Watermelon Punch, Grape Punch feels more uniform and cohesive, while Watermelon Punch relies on high contrast and color interplay for its visual impact.

Outside the Superbells® family, Grape Punch continues to show its strengths. Compared to the Cha-Cha™ Series, it feels slightly more controlled and composed, with less visual movement and a more predictable color read. Cabaret® Varieties tend to emphasize refinement, tighter branching, and a polished presentation, while Grape Punch prioritizes bold visibility and seasonal impact. When paired with Colibri® Pure White, its color becomes exceptionally crisp and luminous, making it an excellent choice for high-contrast containers. Placed next to Caliloco Dracula, Grape Punch reads more classic and approachable—less novel and theatrical, but far easier to integrate into a wide range of container and landscape designs.
