More About Lantana ‘Trailing Lavender’
Lantana ‘Trailing Lavender’ is prized for its soft lavender-purple blooms and vigorous spreading habit that delivers dependable, season-long color in full sun. Rounded flower clusters appear continuously from late spring through frost, creating a flowing carpet of color that remains vibrant even during periods of intense heat and drought. The cooler lavender tones provide a calmer, more refined look compared to brighter lantana colors, making it easy to integrate into a wide range of planting designs.
This variety spreads outward rather than upward, forming a low, cascading mound that excels in applications where coverage and movement are desired. It is especially effective spilling over container edges, tumbling down retaining walls, and filling slopes or raised beds where erosion control and visual softness are important. Once established, it knits together quickly, creating dense coverage that suppresses weeds while maintaining consistent bloom.
Why We Like It (Our Trials)
In our trials, ‘Trailing Lavender’ proved exceptionally reliable in hot, sunny conditions with minimal irrigation once established. Plants filled in rapidly, maintained a balanced trailing habit without becoming unruly, and continued blooming steadily through heat waves and dry spells. Even after heavy rain, the plants recovered quickly and resumed flowering without decline.
We especially appreciate its softer, more versatile color palette. The lavender blooms pair effortlessly with whites, silvers, yellows, and ornamental grasses, offering flexibility in both modern and cottage-style plantings. Butterflies and bees were constant visitors throughout the season, making ‘Trailing Lavender’ a strong choice for pollinator-friendly landscapes as well.
Trailing Lavender vs. Other Lantana Varieties
Trailing Lavender Lantana combines a spreading, cascading habit with cool lavender-toned blooms, offering a softer look than most warm-colored lantanas. Compared to Trailing White, Lavender adds color depth while maintaining the same flowing, groundcover-style growth. Unlike the Lucky™ and Little Lucky™ Series, which stay compact and upright, Trailing Lavender is designed to spill and weave, making it ideal for baskets, raised planters, and slopes.
Compared to the Bandana® Series, Trailing Lavender is looser and more expressive, while Bandana varieties bring structure and mid-border presence. Against Lucky® Lavender, Trailing Lavender sacrifices height and density for movement and spread. It also serves as a softer, cooler-toned alternative to New Gold, offering visual calm rather than bright, high-energy yellow coverage. Among trailing forms, it stands out for offering a cooler color option that’s less common in Lantanas.
